Data Apartment, 2026

This is a speculative design project that explores the relationship between home, identity, and digital data. It presents the reality that digital data is scattered across global data centers. In response to this, the project imagines a new type of residential space that stores and displays an individual’s selected digital data.

DATA APARTMENT 2041

This short video is structured as a narrative in the year 2041, featuring a persona who questions why we cannot actually own our personal digital data in our own homes. This speculative narrative allows viewers to position themselves within the scenario and to reformulate their relationship to home by suggesting an alternative apartment that stores and displays digital data spatially as an expression of the dwellers’ identity.

In the video, personal digital traces are brought back from data centers to the home to truly own the personal data that represents personal identity. In the Data Apartment, digital data does not only exist behind digital screens within residential spaces. Rather, it is treated as something that can be owned and curated like furniture within the home.

Fictional Device

In this speculative space, spatialized digital data (holograms) is generated by fictional hologram devices that mimic interior objects and furniture. This fictionality serves as a catalyst, allowing the digital data to be spatialized as immersive forms within interior spaces. Therefore, the holograms become part of the domestic space that represents the dweller’s identity, just as furniture is curated to reflect the identity..

Rather than trying to solve the problem with a realistic spatial design proposal, the project uses speculation to depict the reality of the shift in the relationship between digital data, identity, and domestic interior space. As digital data increasingly occupies a larger part of human life through technological development, the project explores how this shift can be experienced in the space. It presents a speculative approach to how design can respond to emerging cultural and technological conditions through a lens of defamiliarization. Thus, the project seeks to increase awareness of the present by suggesting alternative interpretations and tracing possible ideas for the future.
